June 2nd 1992 the first Nationally Cablecast Mountain Bike magazine was aired in the United States. It was called The Fat Tire Journal and Nike was the Title Sponsor. On May 26th 2008, that show, with a few minor modifications, re-aired on RSN.
CONTENT The name Fat Tire Journal evoked Schwinn Excelsior Fat Tire paper bikes from the 40's. Bonds, Breeze, Kelly, Fisher, Ritchey and the rest of the Marin pioneers preferred the Excelsior with heavy custom modifications, for their scorching REPACK runs in the late 70’s. FTJ was designed to appeal to a broad base of cycling enthusiasts with historical reverence always paramount. Millions of MountainBike sales later, mainstream advertising finally embraced the sport. Off The Front Productions created 15 thirty minute TV shows over the next 3 years. Those shows were produced with the foresight that FTJ would be the historic record of Mountain Biking. Every show provided a sit down interview with a Mountain Biking icon. Bob Roll, Ned Overend, Julie Furtado, John Tomac, Missy Giove and 11 others were interviewed. Regular segments included Quick Tips, Pick The Line, Fat Tire Destinations and Victims of Gravity. Countless segments featuring Greg Herbold and other notables attracted dozens of favorable reviews and exposed thousands to the sport. “‘Journal’s’ strongest point may be its ability to capture the atmosphere of the sport, something that no other mountain biking broadcasts in our memory have been able to do.” |

MUSIC Big Head Todd and the Monsters dominated The Fat Tire Journal in the early shows. Later we produced our own music, hand picking musicians from the local talent pool. DISTRIBUTION Resort Sports Network has recently offered a barter contract to OTFP. RSN and its 28 regional affiliates have agreed to air the original 15 – thirty minute shows under a new RSN designation, highlighting RSN’s classic sports programming. FTJ is the 1st to claim that designation. The Original FTJs will air right after the highly rated Extreme Scene. See the RSN Resort Television demographics section and rate cards attached. Over 1020 :30 second spots and 2040 bumpers are available over the next 2 years. Thank you for taking the time to consider The Fat Tire Journal for your marketing plan. I look forward to speaking with you in person.
